The Ultimate Headlight Restoration Process

We don’t use a generic headlight repair kit that you find at your local auto parts store. We go through an 8-step sanding, compounding, polishing, and protection process to offer the best results.

1 Start sanding headlight with 800 grit: The first round of sanding is where the oxidization is removed. You’ll see a lot of slurry come off.

2 Sand headlight with 1,000 grit: As we move up the process, we remove less oxidization. The focus now is to refine the sanding marks.

3 Sand headlight with 1,500 grit: You can start to see a noticeable difference in the clarity of the headlights.

4 Sand headlights with 2,500 grit

5 Sand headlights with 3,000 grit: This is the final sanding step. The headlight is looking much clearer.

6 Compound the headlights: Using a cutting disc, compound, and machine polisher, we’ll remove the sanding marks.

7 Polish the headlights: Finally, we’ll refine the cutting step to bring out maximum clarity with a light polish and polishing pad.

8 Protect the headlights: For protection, we’ll apply a 1-year ceramic coating. This will provide durable protection.

Dull and oxidized headlights can make your car look old and worn out. But sanding your headlights can help remove the old layer of clear coat that has failed and oxidized, which causes the yellow-foggy look. After sanding, we'll compound and polish them to restore them to their like-new condition. To ensure long-lasting protection, we'll apply a 1-year ceramic coating.

Notice: We no longer offer headlight restorations as a stand-alone service. It’ll need to be combined with at least one other service.

Headlight Restoration FAQ

Do you come to me?
We do not offer headlight restoration as a standalone service. You would have to pair this with another service like a Premium Wash or Wash and Wax (there are some limitations based on distance or location). We service the Long Island area and surrounding areas like Hampton Bays, Riverhead, Smithtown, Southampton, etc.

How long does this service take?
It depends on the size and condition, but it typically takes 45 to 90 minutes to complete. If the condition is severe, it’ll take longer.

Can you restore any headlights?
Like many things, once the headlights reach a certain point, we can only do so much to restore them to a like-new condition. Your headlights can look better after we’re done, but there can also be permanent damage.

Why does my lens get ugly?
Your headlights, just like your paint, have a clear coat on them. The clear coat starts to deteriorate as the sun beats on it week after week. Eventually, what was the clear coat turns into an ugly yellow layer of gunk.

Considering the heat that Long Island produces, your headlights are exposed to maximum heat- and if you park your car directly in the sun for most of the day, that will only add to the damage. Because of the material of the headlights, the clear coat on them doesn’t last nearly as much as the clear coat on the paint.

How do I keep my headlights looking good?
It can be tricky. Typical waxes and sealants will only protect your car for so long. If you park your car in the shade most of the time, it’ll last longer than if you park outside in the sun most of the time.

You can apply a sealant or wax to your headlights every 3 to 5 weeks. This can take less than 15 minutes to do.
